Opal care~

I use a lot of Ethiopian opals which are a pretty soft & translucent stone. They are also hyrdrophane… this means, when they get wet they may absorb water which causes them to look dull or lose some of their color while wet.

they should NOT be worn in water, pools, lakes, oceans. Since they do absorb water this can damage them & cause them to become discolored. They also should not be sprayed with any perfume, beauty products, lotion, oil, etc. think of the opal as a sponge, anything liquid can damage the stones.  To 100% avoid any damage or discoloration I recommend just taking them off completely if getting wet or being in water.

That is only the case for ETHIOPIAN opals. Australian opals aren’t hydrophane, so you don’t have to worry about getting those wet or taking them off in water.

Since they are soft in nature, they can scratch or chip. So please, treat your jewelry with care. They should not be worn during rough activities. All pieces should last a long time if handled properly!
